A job description for deacons

Acts 7

The role of deacon, which has its origin in this chapter, is an interesting curiosity to me. Why? Scripture tells us almost nothing about what deacons are supposed to do. In Paul’s letters (particularly, 1 Timothy 3) we learn more about the requirements for the position, but we don’t get more about the job description. Some will point back to Acts 7 and say that deacons are called to be servants just like the first ones were. But it almost seems as if these deacons were called to a very specific task, for a very specific reason. I think any conjecture as the job description of deacons is mostly a guess. I say all of that just to remind us that there are places in Scripture, no matter how we want to say otherwise, that are unclear. Sure, we can try to spell out everything and come up with answers for every question. But whenever we’re leaning more toward conjecture than biblical truth, we must very careful when we’re too pushy about those opinions.
