Since last Sunday is Palm Sunday this is a great fit for us to read the following Monday. Like I mentioned when we went through the Passion narrative in Matthew, it’s amazing to me that the same people heralding the coming of Christ in Jerusalem are the same ones who would be yelling, “crucify Him” just a few days later.
My guess is that these people were expecting a military Messiah. You’ve probably heard that before. But that maybe why they changed their tune so quickly. When Jesus was caught by the Roman authorities, the people assumed they had been coronating the wrong person. It’s easy to let our expectations rule our spiritual lives. When God doesn’t act like we think He should we get disillusioned. But then again if God always acted like we think He should He wouldn’t be much of a God.
