Becoming a servant

Mark 9: 30-50

There are a lot of directions a person can go with today’s passage. But what jumped out at me was Jesus’ statement about being a servant. That’s such a hard pill to swallow in our culture. Everything is about being first and best. Instead of striving for our advancement, the Bible calls on us to live our lives as a servant, to try to put the needs of others before ourselves.

That’s a tough challenge, but I believe it’s a core element to what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It’s natural to look out for ourselves and the needs of our loved ones. But what if we looked at every single person we came in contact with and asked ourselves how we could help them, how we could put their needs above our own. When you think about it, that’s radical. But I believe that is exactly what God calls us to do in this passage.
