What an intriguing passage! What has always particularly intrigued me about this passage is the father telling Jesus, “I do believe. Help my unbelief.” We tend to think of faith as total, unquestioned, belief in God. If you’re like me, that’s rare. The example I see in Scripture isn’t as much about unquestioned belief in God as it is having enough faith to do what Jesus asks us to do. Faith is much, much more about obedience than belief. Notice that when the father tells Jesus about his less-than-perfect faith, Jesus doesn’t tell him to come back when he believes more fully. Somehow, it was enough faith just to come to Jesus.
Maybe you know God has called you to do something. You’re struggling because you know you don’t have complete faith to do it. But do you have enough faith to just come to Jesus? Do you have enough faith to obey even if you can’t see how all the details will work out? That’s what it all comes down to.
