OK, I have to start this entry a little off topic. As I read the first couple lines, I had to laugh a bit. The passage says that Jesus “entered the house and didn’t want anyone to know it.” Now isn’t that called breaking and entry?
I guess not when Jesus does it.
Back to the main topic. In verse 34, the passage says that Jesus let out a sigh before opening the ears of the deaf man. I read an interpretation of this passage one time that really resonated with me. The writer was trying to explain why Jesus would sigh before doing this miracle. His conclusion was that Jesus knew that the man’s deafness and the other infirmities were not a part of God’s original plan. The curse of Adam’s sin was that man would forever live in a less than perfect state. The fall meant that physically we would not be as we should be. And that exasperated Jesus to a degree. It made him sad.
Know this. God’s original plan for mankind was to live in Eden. Now he knew from the beginning that Adam’s choice (and eventually our own) would lead us to a less-than Eden state, but he had higher dreams for us. But one day, if you’ve committed yourself to Jesus, He will heal all the wounds of the Fall. Speaking of our one-day future in a New Heaven and New Earth, John writes in the book of Revelation (chapter 21, vv. 3-4):
” 3 Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: [a]
Look! God’s dwelling [b] is with men,
and He will live with them.
They will be His people, (E)
and God Himself will be with them and be their God. [c]
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (F)
Death will exist no longer; (G)
grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, (H)
because the previous things [d] have passed away. (I)”
One day those of us with a relationship with Christ will spend an eternity in a place with no death, no grief, and no more tears. One day everything will be exactly as it should. One day the consequences of the Fall will be totally and completely reversed.
What a future we have in Christ!
