The sacredness of rest

Mark 6: 14-32

I find Jesus’ command to his followers about rest in verse 31 fascinating. Jesus had big plans for his disciples. And I mentioned in my sermon on Sunday, he had keen understanding that he had limited time to be with his follower. Yet Jesus always seemed to have time to rest and urge his followers to do likewise. Jesus has big plans for us as well. But interestingly enough they’re plans to big not to include rest. God built our need for rest within the very fabric of the universe (just look at his institution of the Sabbath at the beginning of Genesis). Sometimes we can get so fired up and passionate about what God is doing in the world (both good things) that we become convinced that we can’t rest. Let’s learn to match the rhythms of Jesus’ life. Let’s learn to get away and rest for a bit, not because the message isn’t urgent, not because all of the great things we’re doing for God isn’t important, but presicely because they are important and deserve our very best.
